A .org is the first generic TLD, established in 1984, it is currently being managed by the Public Interest Registry (PIR). PIR is one of the largest registries globally and has been operational since its inception in 2003.

Now days, a .org domain name can also be used for open-source projects, some commercial entities and individuals’ sites as well. It includes a variety of organisations, such as educational and civic institutions, environmental and sustainability initiatives, cultural & sports associations, social and volunteer groups, etc.
