Small Business Tips — Office Spring Cleaning

The annual Office Spring Clean is a must on all levels of the business; it’s a time to realign your business for the months ahead and get your priorities “straight”.

Did you know? This the time to start thinking about what your business will offer on Black Friday and to start planning your Christmas strategy.

Every business is different, and the term “Spring Cleaning” may have different interpretations for your specific industry, however, there are a couple of general points that can help you to get started:

1. Relook Business Goals
What did you plan for your business to achieve in 2022? How is it going? Relook goals and adjust or make new ones if needed.

  • It is important to keep your finger on the pulse of what is happening in your industry to ensure that you remain “trendy”.
  • What are your competitors up to?
  • What can you do to stand out more? Think outside of the box, realistically.

Note: Goals mean nothing if they are not accompanied by an action plan, and bear in mind to delegate where necessary.

2. Tackle the Admin
Spruce up the monthly admin side of things, specifically spending. If you haven’t done this, no better time than Spring!

  • How is your Cash Flow looking?
  • Where can you save?
  • Review the prices you are asking for your products and services. Are they market-related?
  • Check stock levels and replenish where needed. Consider running a Spring Promo on stock that’s been sitting around for a while, or that service that everyone forgets you offer.
  • Review what your suppliers are offering you. Is it the best deal you can get? Try to negotiate, or shop around.

Did you know Domains.co.za offers customers an UnCapped* Hosted PBX solution that allows your employees to make and take calls from anywhere? It is an excellent way to reduce your business telephone bills and help you budget for this monthly expense.

3. Declutter and Dust-off (Literally!)
Neat and tidy office environments have been proven to improve productivity.

Do a proper deep-clean of each office, aerate and get rid of dust and germs that have been hanging around since last spring and all through winter! Get employees involved to de-clutter, as it always has a way of accumulating in and around desks.

Tip: Invest in an office plant or two, Nature has the power to destress and inspire.
Paint that bare “boring” wall everyone stares at the whole day, in a vibrant orange to improve communications, or a natural stone, earth, or clay colour.

4. Revamp your Online Marketing
Businesses need leads; on-going online marketing initiatives can help make these leads funnel through in a steady and sustainable stream. Obtain insights into your company’s month-to-month online efforts, and action the following:

  • Ask: Is it working?
  • Ask: Are we consistent?
  • Update your website. From products and information straight through to the back-end (plugins).
  • Start sending out monthly newsletters, create blogs and videos, and try to up your Social Media presence.

5. Inspire your Employees
How is your team’s morale in general? Every now and again it is a good idea to make sure your in-house talent is happy and motivated. Hybrid, or remote, working conditions can ‘upset’ the company culture a little and some employees may feel less inspired in their current job roles.

  • Recognise and reward your employees' achievements where appropriate.
  • Consider introducing an annual Spring lunch for the company, or per department.
  • Introduce some colour and get staff to wear red, orange, yellow, or pink for a Spring Week this season.
