.Africa Launch

One domain for the entire African continent

dotAfrica (.africa) is the new generic Top Level Domain (gTLD) for the African continent. It is an opportunity to forge a unique online identity which will associate your products, services and/or information with the continent, as well as the peoples of Africa.

The Registry for the dotAfrica (.africa) gTLD is Registry Africa, based in Mauritius. However, the launch and running of dotAfrica will be managed by ZACR (ZA Central Registry), based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Please note that for now, the pricing of all dotAfrica (.africa) domains will be reflected in US$ (US Dollars). This will be converted to ZAR (Rands) prior to the launch of each phase.

The dotAfrica (.africa) application has been submitted with the endorsement and support of the African Union Commission (AUC), individual African governments, as well as regional governmental agencies and organisations. The dotAfrica project enjoys widespread support from the African community, including AfriNIC, AfTLD, ITU, UNECA and Nepad.

The aim of having a dotAfrica (.africa) gTLD is to bring the internet business community of the entire African continent together and assist in developing e-commerce, technology and infrastructure. dotAfrica (.africa) gTLD is truly an African initiative established by Africans for Africa and the World.

This phase is given to corporations and companies that have registered trademarks and/or brands. ICANN has set the international qualifying parameters that will need to be met prior to successful registration of a domain.

All applicants will require either a VT file (Validation Token) from The Trademark Clearhouse, or alternatively, a SMD file (Signed Mark Data), which can be obtained from the Mark Validation System. Both of these electronic files will indicate that the applying registrant has the right to apply for a domain in the Sunrise Phase and can substantiate their claim.

The applicant must provide either the SMD or the VT e-file to the Registrar (domains.co.za), as we must process the dotAfrica (.africa) registration application in accordance with ICANN’s technical specifications for the Sunrise Phase launch period.

Please note that although the VT is applicable to all newly released gTLDs from ICANN, it is only functional for the to the end of the Launch period it will be utilized in. The SMD files (Signed Mark Data), which are obtained via the Mark Validation System, only apply to ZACR namespaces, and are valid for the lifespan of the ZACR namespace.

Landrush / Early Access Program

Applications for registrations will be accepted during the Landrush Phase, however priority will be given to all registrations in the Sunrise Phase, as well as certain names that have Trademark & Branding rights with valid VTs and SMDs.

Should there be more than one registration application for a domain name, domains.co.za will receive a Claims Notice from the Registry indicating that it has been registered with the MVS or TMCH. Domains.co.za will advise the applicant, and the onus is on the applicant to acknowledge that they are aware of the prior right and if they wish to continue with the registration process.

The Landrush Phase is made up of 4 (four) periods, when each phase of the Landrush period has ended, all contested domain registrations will then proceed to a further phase, called the Auction Phase and all applicants will be notified by the Registry of the Auction process. Once the auction has run, the highest bidders registration will be successful on receipt of full payment for the domain in question. Any uncontested domain registrations will be delegated by the Registry once full payment has been received.

Please note that for now, the pricing of all dotAfrica (.africa) domains will be reflected in US$ (US Dollars). This will be converted to ZAR (Rands) prior to the launch of each phase.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will .africa become available and How do I register a domain name?

There are a number of registration phases and sub phases. The General Availability period is where the general public will be able to register a domain name through our website. This phase starts on the 4th July 2017. If you have a registered trademark or would like a Premium domain name during the Landrush phase, please contact us on sales@domains.co.za

How much will a .africa domain name cost?

All pricing is listed above for each registration phase. Please note that for now, the pricing of all dotAfrica (.africa) domains are shown in US$ (US Dollars), Prior to each Phase, the US Dollar price will be converted into a South Africa Rand price.

What are the protection mechanisms available to me with regards to my .africa domain name?

The Registry (Registry Africa) and Domains.co.za must abide by the policies set out by ICANN (The governing body of all TLD’s) or risk losing accreditation. The various policies include:

  • Rights Protection Policies
  • Dispute Resolutions
  • Sunrise Policy
  • Landrush Policies, etc

Can a .africa domain be reserved/pre-registered?

Pre-registration of .africa domain names will not be possible. Any application submitted during the .africa sunrise phase must have a corresponding Validation Token or SMD in order to obtain the highest possible priority.

If an applicant wants to secure the best possible claim to a domain name application during the launch, it must be associated with a pre-validated trade mark in either the TMCH or MVS Systems. This is the official way in which you can best secure your rights to a domain name in the new .africa namespace.

When will .africa be available to use as an option? I would like to start my website using it.

For more detailed information on the launch program with the anticipated timelines, please refer above, Should you have any trademark or branding rights to the .africa (dotAfrica) domain/s name you want, please ensure that you apply during the Sunrise Phase with your validations (refer above).
