How do I Fix my WordPress White Screen problem?

Due to the fact that your White Screen is caused by a software conflict, you will have to work through a process of elimination.

This is where the Domains.co.za Premium WordPress Hosting packages are great, as you can use the Staging Area which has a duplicate of your website, thus allowing you to upload any new plugins, themes, or update existing ones to first ensure that there are no conflicts before going publishing it live.

Clear out Browsing History / Cache:

1. Go to your Browsers History and clear all cookies, saved data and history files.

2. Close the browser, wait a minute or so and then reopen it.

3. If you still cannot see your website, then move on to the next step.

If it happened while you were working in WordPress:

1. Retrace your steps as to what changes you made, specifically any coding, plugins, theme changes or updates.
– Uninstall any plugins that you installed or updated one at a time and keep rechecking to see if you still have a white screen (refresh your browser page by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking the reload icon).

If it happened ‘when you weren’t looking!’:

1. If there are other people with access to your WordPress check with them first.

2. Wp-admin may be a blank page too, so check the website again online, as it may give you an error message:
   – Missing Theme – refer to this article
   – Memory Limit – refer here
   – Timing is Out – refer here

Check your WordPress Plugins:

NOTE: Plugins may also be affected through any recent WordPress automated updates.

1. Review all plugins that may have been either installed or updated.

2. The quickest way is to deactivate all plugins. * NOTE: It is very important to leave all plugins deactivated while trouble-shooting.

3. In the /public_html/wp-content folder rename the plugin folder

4. Login via wp-admin and check if the website is up

.If the website is up then continue with the instructions below and reactivate your plugins one at a time; however, if there is a white screen please continue to the next step.

5. In your Dashboard select Plugins – all of them will now be displayed as Inactive

6. Test them individually – if you know which have recently be installed, you can start with those – if not, do them in order

7. Activate the first plugin

8. Check if your website is still up by refreshing your webpage (Ctrl+Refresh)

9. Deactivate the plugin and move on to the next

10. Continue activating and deactivating each individual plugin until you have run through them all.

11.If there is a plugin that causes a White Screen continue as below, if not continue to the next step.

12. There are a few options you can decide to follow:
  – Find a new plugin with similar functionality
  – Roll back to the previous version, either download it from WordPress, or upload your last back-up of your website
  – If it is an essential plugin, contact the developer and request a patch

Checking Other WordPress Integrations:

1. A conflict may occur between a SSL Certificate and a Content Delivery Network – although this is rare, as their integration into WordPress is seamless.

2. Again, check any recent activity related to your WordPress site (internally or externally)

3. Either Remove, or Deactivate and recheck your website.
