Domains.co.za Domain Renewal
When you purchase a domain from Domains.co.za, the domain name’s Auto-Renew is enabled by default and the system will generate an invoice when the renewal is due. Payment of the invoice will be automatic if you have a Debit or Credit Card as your method of payment.
If you are uncertain as to whether you would like the domain renewed, please disable the Auto-Renew function.
Please note, that the system will still send out the regulatory ICANN Procedural Notifications for domain renewals – for more in-depth information.
The registered domain’s owner is responsible for keeping track of the expiration date and renewing it timeously.
Should the domain not be renewed after 10 days, it will fall into Redemption. During the Redemption period, that domain may still be renewed, however a Redemption Fee will be levied in addition to the domain’s renewal fee. After the Redemption period has passed, the domain becomes available to the public for purchase.
A Domains.co.za client can see access their account and view their domain’s status, i.e. if auto renew is enabled or not and if not they can enable it.
Most domain Registrars allow the set up of auto-renewal for a domain name so that it doesn’t have to be renewed manually every year.

Check Registrar Domain Expiry & Domain Late Payment Policies
It’s important to check with your specific Registrar for their policies and fees related to domain registration, renewal, grace and redemption periods and late-payment related fees.
The duration that a domain name is valid for can vary depending on the domain extension (TLD) and the policies of the domain Registrar.
Domain Name Renewal & Domain Expiry Periods
Typically, domains are registered for a period ranging from one year to 10 years. Here are some key points regarding domain validity:
- Minimum Registration Time – A minimum of one year’s registration is available for most domain names.
- Maximum Registration Period – Some domains can last up to 10 years.
- Renewal – Before domain registration expires, owners must renew it. It can often be renewed for several years simultaneously, up to the maximum permitted time.
- Auto-Renewal – To avoid unintentional expiration, many registrants provide an auto-renewal option. Unless the owner opts out, the domain will renew automatically for the predetermined period.
- Grace Period – A domain owner often has a grace period after the domain expires, during which they can renew it without paying additional fees. There is no set length for this grace period.
- Redemption Period – The domain may go into a redemption period if not renewed during the grace period. The domain can still be renewed during this period, but this is usually at a higher price.
- Availability – The domain will eventually be released and made available for registration by others if it is not renewed during the redemption period.
