What is Two Factor Authentication (2FA)?

Domains.co.za has implemented Two Factor Authentication (2FA) to provide the highest level of security for managing your domain and website. This additional safeguard helps prevent unauthorised access and reduces risks posed by various cyber threats.

Two Factor Authentication Explained

Two Factor Authentication (2FA) is a security measure that enhances the protection of online accounts, systems, and applications by adding an extra form of verification during the login process.

Traditionally, online accounts have been secured with just a password. However, relying solely on passwords can leave accounts vulnerable to threats like phishing and password leaks. Two Factor Authentication (2FA) enhances security by requiring two types of verification before access is granted.

Additional Information

How Does Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) Work?

When you log into an online platform like your Domains.co.za account, instead of only entering your username and password, you must provide an additional level of security, known as two-factor authentication (2FA). This typically involves entering a unique verification code displayed in a 2fa app on your smartphone or an email sent to another trusted device.

Some of the most popular two-factor authentication apps include:

  • Google Authenticator: Available for Android and iPhone
  • Microsoft Authenticator: Ideal for Microsoft products.
  • Authy: Convenient for Apple Watch users.

You can set up 2FA using apps like Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator. After enabling it, you can receive the 6-digit code via text message, email, or app. This flexibility allows you to select the method that works best for you.

When logging into your Domains.co.za account, you can set up 2FA; this requires your username and password plus a randomly generated numerical code sent to your email or cellphone. This means that even if someone obtains your login details, they cannot access your account without the additional code.

Most online accounts now offer the option to set up 2FA for logging in. This allows you to use one 2FA app for multiple accounts, keeping them all in one place. You can also use multiple 2FA apps across different devices.

Download the Google Authenticator app (for Android and iPhone) or Microsoft Authenticator and Authy for your Apple Watch from the respective app stores and set them up.

Levels of Authentication

  • First Factor: This includes your domain provider or hosting account credentials, such as your username and password.
  • Second Factor: This introduces an additional layer of security, typically a one-time code sent to your mobile phone or generated by an app, which must be entered to complete the login.

Most 2FA apps generate time-sensitive codes that must be entered within a specific time frame. Some apps also offer biometric authentication, such as fingerprint scans or facial recognition, as the second factor.

Implementing 2FA helps protect your domain management account by adding a much-needed extra level of protection against unauthorised access, brute force attacks, data breaches, and potential domain hijacking.
