Domain Transfers
Domain Transfers are subject to certain conditions:
- A newly registered Domain may not be transferred within the first 60-day period after the purchase date.
- Domain owners cannot have any outstanding debt with their previous service provider; this could prevent the release of an authorization code.
- There should be no disputes over the Domain itself.
- The Domain’s renewal should not have lapsed, and it should not be in redemption.
By understanding the various phases and factors influencing the Domain Transfer process, you can navigate this journey smoothly and ensure a successful transition to your new service provider. If you have any questions or concerns during the process, contact Domains.co.za for assistance.
What is a Domain Transfer?
A Domain Transfer is the process in which the owner of a Domain Name (the Registrant) switches from one ISP, Registrar, or Hosting provider to another. Domain Transfers occur for various reasons, such as moving your website and hosting to another provider and wanting to transfer your Domain Name as well. You may have multiple Domains registered with different providers and want to consolidate them to a single Registrar or provider with the best Domain management system and control panel. According to ICANN policy, you cannot transfer a Domain within 60 days of its registration, enforcing a 60-day Change of Registrant lock.
How the Domain Transfer Process Works
Initiating a Domain Transfer
The process starts with the owner of the Domain beginning the Transfer on the new hosting provider’s platform; in this case, Domains.co.za. This involves providing an authorization code (EPP code) obtained from the current provider.
Verification & Confirmation
Domains.co.za then sends a Transfer request to the previous service provider. To ensure security, they will email the Domain owner to verify and confirm this request.
Release From the Previous Provider
Upon verification, the previous provider releases the Domain to Domains.co.za. This step involves updating the Domain’s status and providing the necessary authorisation.
Transfer Period
The Transfer period, also called the “Transfer window,” begins. During this time, which can take up to several days, DNS records are globally updated to point to Domains.co.za’s Domain name servers (DNS).
Completion
Once the Transfer is successfully completed, the Domain falls under the management of Domains.co.za. The Whois Lookup information will be automatically updated to reflect the changes.
Timeline
While the entire process can range from a few days to 7 (seven) working days, most transfers are concluded within five to seven days. The actual duration depends on the policies and efficiency of the service providers involved, and any additional verification steps they may implement.
Domain Transfer Scams
Domain Transfer scams are fraudulent activities utilised by hackers while Domains are being moved from one registrar to another. Scammers deceive Domain owners into transferring their Domain names, exploiting the Domain registration and Transfer process to gain control of valuable Domains for various malicious purposes.
- Fake Renewal Notices – Scammers send fraudulent emails posing as Domain Registrars, often claiming the recipient’s Domain is about to expire. They may provide a link to a fake web page where the victim is prompted to transfer the Domain to renew it.
- Phishing Attacks – Phishing emails are designed to trick owners into revealing their login credentials. Scammers often use fake Domain Registrar websites that pose as legitimate ones, prompting users to log in and unknowingly hand over their information.
- Unauthorised Transfer Requests – Some scammers attempt to initiate unauthorised Domain transfers by exploiting vulnerabilities in the Domain Registrar’s security or gaining access to the Domain owner’s account credentials.
