Email Forwarding
Email forwarding allows you to redirect incoming messages from one email account to multiple different addresses or domains. Once configured, any email sent to the original recipient’s address will be automatically forwarded to the designated additional recipients configured to receive them.
This setup ensures that the entire conversation, along with any attachments, can be replied to by everyone included in the chain. Managing multiple email accounts across different domains. For example, it allows you to combine personal and work emails.
The two most common methods of forwarding emails are manual and automatic:
- Manual forwarding involves redirecting individual emails to different addresses.
- Auto-forwarding redirects all incoming emails to other accounts. You can configure filters to forward only specific emails to the designated recipients.
What are MX Records?
Mail Exchange (MX) records are a specific type of Domain Name System (DNS) record that direct email messages to designated mail servers. They identify the mail servers responsible for accepting email messages on behalf of a domain. These records operate in conjunction with protocols such as the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP).
As mentioned above, when setting up email forwarding, MX records can be used to redirect mail received by one domain to another domain’s email server.
DNS Records Explained
DNS records contain information about a domain, including the IP address associated with a domain name and the instructions for handling requests for that domain. There are several types, each serving a specific purpose, such as directing emails to an email server or providing a domain name in reverse lookups.
These records are stored in authoritative DNS servers around the globe and are composed of text files formatted in DNS syntax. This syntax includes a sequence of characters used as commands that instruct the server on what actions to take.
