How To Set A Default Address In cPanel

Efficient email management begins with knowing how to set a default address in cPanel. By doing this for your domain, you can control how emails sent to non-existent addresses are managed, whether that means discarding them, forwarding them to another address, or directing them to your main email account. This feature is useful for filtering out spam, catching misspelled email addresses, maintaining customer communication, and serving as a backup for temporary or deactivated email accounts.

This guide shows you how to setup your default email in cPanel using the dashboard available in your Domains.co.za Web Hosting plans.

How to Set a Default Address in cPanel

This article assumes that you have already logged into cPanel from your Domains.co.za Account.

Setting or Changing the Default Email Address

1. Scroll through the cPanel Tools and down to the Emails section.

Configuring the Default Address

2. Click Default Address; this will display your current default address.

At this stage, your current default email will be set to your account name, meaning all unrouted emails will be stored in your main account email. Since you likely won’t be using that address, you will have to set it to an email address that you will be using.

3. Select Forward to Email Address.

4. Then, enter the Forward to Email Address you want as your default address.

  • Forward to Email Address: Enter a valid email address (e.g. catchall@yourdomain.co.za). All misaddressed mail will be sent here.
  • Discard with error to sender (default): Rejects the email and sends an error message (recommended for avoiding spam).
  • Forward to your system account: Forwards to your default system mailbox.  Usually not recommended.

5. Then click Change.

That’s it! The address has been successfully changed and will be visible the next time you click the Default Address icon.

Additional Information

Why Setting a Default Email in cPanel is Essential

  • Managing Incoming Emails: When someone sends an email to a non-existent address on your domain, the default address ensures that the email isn’t lost. Instead, you can choose to discard it, forward it to another address, or send it to your main account.
  • Avoid Missing Important Emails: Typos happen, and email addresses may be entered incorrectly. With a default in place, you can still receive emails even if they are mistakenly addressed to non-existent accounts.
  • Customer Communication: For businesses, a default can help ensure that you don’t miss any messages from potential customers or clients who may mistype an email address when trying to reach you.

Benefits of Using Default Addresses

Spam Management

Setting up a default mail address for your account can help manage spam. You can opt to delete spam emails or forward them to another account for review, keeping your primary inbox clutter-free.

Handling Temporary Emails

If you frequently create temporary email addresses for specific purposes (like accessing online services or subscribing to newsletters), this address acts as a safety net and can catch these emails, helping you manage your inbox more effectively.

Backup

In the unlikely event that you accidentally delete an email account or forget to renew a domain, having default addresses ensures that you continue to receive emails sent to those addresses. This backup acts as a safety net, preventing important messages from getting lost.

Customisation

Depending on your hosting provider and cPanel setup, there may be additional options for managing your email addresses and account settings. For example, some hosting companies offer advanced filtering tools, auto-responders, and forwarding rules to customise how emails are handled.
