What Is Browser Recognition & How Does It Function With An SSL Certificate?

What Is Browser Recognition?

Browser Recognition refers to the process by which web browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and others, recognise and validate SSL Certificates presented by websites.

Secure Sockets Layers, or SSLs, are cryptographic protocols that encrypt the data sent between a server and a browser to provide internet communication security.

An encrypted channel for information exchange is established with these certificates between the web server and the browser. The browser’s capacity to trust the SSL provider is a prerequisite for trust between a browser and a server.

Browser Recognition Process

When servers and browsers connect, the following process takes place:

  1. The browser requests identification.
  2. The server sends a copy of the SSL Certificate.
  3. The browser then checks whether it trusts the SSL.
  4. When the browser establishes trust thanks to the SSL Certificate, it replies to the server.
  5. The server returns a digitally signed acknowledgement to start an SSL-encrypted session.
  6. Encrypted data can now be shared between the browser and the server.

Additional Information

How SSL Certificate Trusts Works

When an SSL certificate is issued by a Certificate Authority (CA) that the browser trusts, the browser verifies the issuer’s source before displaying the secured website’s content. If the certificate is self-signed or issued by an unrecognised Certificate Authority, the browser may display a security alert or warning.

Root Certificate Ubiquity

Many browser developers include root certificates from reputable CAs in their software packages. The degree of an SSL Certificate’s browser recognition, or “browser compatibility”, or its root ubiquity, indicates how many browsers trust the CA. Some root certificates may not be available to users with older browsers. Consequently, SSL Certificate issuers do not guarantee 100% browser compatibility.
